If You Only Knew

Chapter 1: The Accident. 
 
“Damn another boring summer day Reese. A few more days and school will 
come to a close and I have to go work at my uncle's store again this 
summer. I hope I can get some quality time off to have fun this summer.” 
  
“I don't know Randy. Last year I hardly saw you after school let out.” 
  
“Yeah I know. Come on let's get to my place it's starting to storm and I 
don't want to get soaked.” 
  
We started to hurry our pace as the storm grew closer and as we approached 
the old Johnson's farmland the skies opened up on us. In the distance we 
heard the thunder but we took off through the middle of the open land like 
it was nothing but rain wanting to get to my house as soon as we could. My 
mom promised me a new play station game for getting good grades and it was 
home waiting for me to open it. 
I was faster then Reese and for that reason I was about 15 yards ahead of 
him when it happened. The next thing I knew I was on the ground dazed and 
totally out of it with Reese standing over me. 
  
This is how Reese explained it to me when it was over with. 
  
“Randy. RANDY! Awe shit man! Randy. Can you hear me? Look I am going for 
help. I'll be right back!” 
  
He ran to the street and grabbed a payphone and dialed 911. 
  
“Yeah my name is Reese Wilson, I am over at the old Johnson farm property 
on Filmore Road and my friend was just struck by lightning! Please send 
help immediately!” 
  
He hung up the phone and ran back to me. I was still on the ground and 
semi conscious. 
  
“Hang in there Randy. Help is on the way man!” 
  
In the distance I heard sirens but it didn't mean much in my condition. I 
passed out and the next thing I knew I was in the hospital with my mom and 
dad standing over me. 
  
“Randy.” 
  
As I was coming out of it I could hear my mom. 
  
“Steve, Randy is waking up. Go get the nurse. Sweetie? Can you hear me?” 
  
“Mom? What happened?” 
  
“Oh honey you had us all scared to death. You were struck by lightning and 
well I will tell you the rest another time but your okay now I hope, that 
is all that matters.” 
  
The doctors check me out and after a night in the hospital I was released 
the next morning and headed home to rest. Needless to say I will probably 
miss the rest of the final week of school. Not much but crap anyway as we 
were making up a few snow days from the winter. But everything was going 
pretty good that afternoon until Reese showed up after school. He came up 
to my room. I was in bed in my PJ's and watching cartoons. I loved them 
and watched whenever I could. 
  
“Hey Reese. Come on in man. How did school… go?” 
  
I paused and he looked at me like I was from outer space. 
  
“What's up with you Randy? You look like you just saw a ghost?” 
  
“Not exactly but give me a few minutes to figure this out and I will tell 
you. I just really feel weird.” 
  
“Want me to call your mom?” 
  
“No, NO! Not that way. I just feel different since I saw you.” 
  
“How?” 
  
“Give me a few minutes and I will tell you okay?” 
  
“Sure.” 
  
“So how was school? Did Kyle kiss Jennifer like he said he was going to?” 
  
“I don't think so. I didn't see him today. Since you weren't there I sort 
of spent the day with David and Tommy.” 
  
“Oh. Okay.” 
  
I drifted off into this really weird state and I found myself being able 
to read Reese's mind and it really scared me. 
  
“Randy. RANDY? Man I am gonna get you mom.” 
  
“No. Wait. That was so weird man.” 
  
“What was, I was talking to you about Dave and Tommy and you were off in 
some distant place when I looked at you and it took almost 3 minutes to 
get you back to me. Are you sure you're okay.” 
  
“Yeah I heard everything you said and then some.” 

”Then some? What are you talking about?” 
  
“You better sit down. This is going to freak you out.” 
  
“Randy you're scaring me again man!” 
  
“Just relax I am fine and stop thinking about going to get my mom.” 

”How did you know I was thinking that?” 
  
“That's just it Reese. I don't know how I knew it. But when I look at you 
I can read your mind. I guess the lightning did it to me or something. I 
just noticed that when I look at you and focus on you I could understand 
your thoughts without any problem.” 
  
“Shit! I am dead. If you can do that I suppose we have things to talk 
about. Serious stuff too! But think of what fun we can have man! If this 
is true, on everyone. Wholly shit man we are gonna have some fun this 
summer.” 
  
“I know and I also just read that thought that flashed through your mind 
and its just what I suspected all along Reese.” 

“What? I didn't do it honest.” 
  
“Oh knock it off. I know what your thinking remember.” 
  
“Fuck! Then you know?” 
  
“Yeah, I know. You're gay Reese.” 
  
“I guess I better go then huh?”

fair I guess its time you knew. I am gay too.” 

”No way man! Are you serious? I mean we fooled around enough for me to 
wonder but you never, well I thought… Ahhh I don't know what to think I am 
so messed up now.” 
  
I leaned over to him and kissed him on the cheek. He looked at me and 
turned red. 
  
“Whatcha do that for?” 
  
“Because you wanted me to.” 
  
“AH shit this sucks! How am I ever gonna keep anything from you now?” 
  
“I guess your not gonna.” 
  
We both laughed and he moved closer to me on the bed. 
  
“Well one good thing came out of this Randy. I can finally tell you that I 
love you and not worry about it.” 
  
“Yeah Reese I know and I love you too.” 
  
“Really? AWESOME!” 
  
We hugged and were about to kiss on the lips when I heard my mom coming up 
the steps. We broke our embrace and both felt weird but luckily mom didn't 
notice anything. 
  
“Mrs. Brooks your not gonna believe what Randy…” 
  
“REESE! If I want my mom to know anything I will tell her!” 
  
“Sorry.” 
  
“What's that all about honey?” 
  
“Nothing mom. Just feeling a lot better and I think I want to go for a 
walk with Reese if it's okay?” 
  
“Sure as long as Reese is with you just in case anything happens. It's 
fine with me.” 
  
“Thanks mom. I am gonna get dressed and go in a little while. And no I am 
not hungry but thanks anyway… Err I mean what did you want anyway?” 
  
She looked at me like I was nuts and Reese almost lost it. 

”What did you say about food? I didn't say a word.” 

”Sorry. I just figured that was why you came up. You're always trying to 
feed me something anyway so I just guessed…” 
  
She turned and walked out the door shaking her head and I was off the 
hook… for now. 
  
“Damn that was close.” 
  
“Yeah you better be careful now or you will get into a lot of trouble.” 
  
“I am starting to see that. But so far it only works when I am looking at 
the person. Maybe that is the only way but still it's awesome.” 
  
“Yeah I bet it is!” 
  
“Shut the door please Reese. I want to change and I don't need my sister 
or anyone else in here now. Lock it too.” 
  
I got out of bed and threw off my top leaving myself with just my pajama 
bottoms on. Reese had never seen me nude before and I was a little shy 
about it even though I had gotten naked occasionally in Gym class while 
changing. We aren't in the same gym class so that's how he still hasn't 
seen me. It still bothered me even at 14 years old but I was starting to

The season is almost over and I had a pretty good one so far. A few games 
left and then the playoffs. My team is in second place and we still have a 
chance for first if the Hawks lose another game. They play the Panthers 
tonight and that is a big game. The Panthers are like a game or so behind 
us and a win will almost put all three of us in a tie for first place. 
Luckily we beat the Panthers twice so they won't get in our way if it 
comes down to a tie. We split so far with the Hawks and we play them in 
our last game. Its gonna be a huge game and everyone will probably be 
there next week. But none of that matters if we don't beat the mediocre 
Raiders tomorrow. We headed over to the baseball field to see who was 
around and what was going on. It was only 3:30 so at best it would be a 
pick up game or someone hitting or throwing the ball around. Our town is 
big on baseball and when we all come together as an all-star team we 
should win the local championship and move on to the regional part of the 
tournament. The way things are set up around here we can go on for weeks 
if we keep winning. But that is the future. Right now I just want to see

is my first day out after the accident so we are probably going to get to

“Screw him. He is a douche bag!”

“I didn't mean really screw him!”

“I'll duh you.” 
  
He ran away and I caught up to him and gently smacked him in the head and 
we both laughed. The guys saw us and suddenly I was flooded with emotions 
as everyone's thoughts hit me at once. It's all so new I have to learn who 
is thinking what but one on one it will be ok I think… I hope! I couldn't 
quite make out who was saying what but as I sorted through all of it they 
started to match up to each kid. Nothing bad so far just all-good wishes 
came to mind. I finally got everyone calmed down and talked to the group 
as one so I didn't have to repeat myself a hundred times and answer all 
the questions they had. After a grilling of their questions I was invited 
to play in their pick up game. 
  
“No thanks guys. I'm not allowed to run around today. Maybe tomorrow 
though. I will find out in the morning when I see the doctor. I really 
want to play in tomorrow's game. I'll just sit and watch for now. Thanks 
anyway guys.” 
  
They all scrambled back onto the field and left Reese and I alone. Reese 
knew a lot about baseball but didn't play much. I never really knew why 
till now… 
  
“Reese you should be playing baseball man! You love the game as much as I 
do.” 
  
“No, it's not for me I don't feel like playing.” 
  
“Why not?” 
  
“Just don't that's all.” 
  
“Reese. We all are scared sometimes but being afraid of the ball…” 
  
Shit! I have to learn to keep my mouth shut. He got up and walked away 
from me after that. 
  
“REESE! Wait. Come on!” 
  
I ran after him and grabbed him by the arm. 
  
“Look. I'm sorry. I didn't mean to just say it flat out like that. I am 
still getting used to this. It's all new. You know I love you man and I 
wouldn't do anything to hurt or embarrass you. Please come back and talk 
to me. Please?” 
  
He turned back to me and headed back over and he sat down on top of the 
stands. I came up from behind and stood so I was even with him as he sat. 
  
“You know as good as this is Randy. It sucks for me. I can't keep anymore 
secrets from you now!” 
  
“I know but what do you want me to do? As soon as I get this under control 
I promise you I will try not to read you if I can. Just hang in there and 
in a few days I'll see how much I can control this and hope it doesn't 
cause me a lot of trouble.” 
  
“Okay Randy. I can wait.” 
  
“Hey look, there's Dave. Why don't you go talk to him Randy and see what 
you can find out.” 
  
Just then Josh grabbed me by the back of the neck. He was a slimy son of a 
bitch and didn't care if I was hurt or not. He was the school bully and 
really strong too. 
  
“Josh dude, he just got out of the hospital. Lay off him.” Said Reese. 
  
Then he got down and tried to help me. 
  
“Shut the fuck up you weasel.” 
  
He shoved Reese away and he fell to the ground. That pissed me off to no 
end. By now the game had stopped and they were watching us instead of 
playing. One way or another Josh had messed with everyone on that field 
and no one liked him. He was about 6 foot and 250 pounds and nothing more 
then 100% bully. It was amazing he was still in school with all the 
trouble he caused at times. Now he was on my back and I wasn't in the mood 
for it. Especially after he knocked Reese down. I went to go help Reese up 
and he tightened the grip on my neck. That pissed me off even more but the 
last time I tried to fight Josh he almost kicked my ass. I just got away.

I broke loose and he headed after me.

“You can't Randy. You just got out of the hospital.” 
  
“Just relax Reese. I told him as I helped him up. I am going to try and 
talk this tub of shit out of it but I wanted to make sure your okay 
first.” I said to him in a low voice. 
  
“I'm fine. Just please be careful. He is really strong.” 
  
“I know I feel my neck from his hand just now squeezing it.” 
  
Everyone was watching to see what was going to happen. Josh didn't care. 
He would pummel anyone who got in his way. 
  
“What's it gonna be Brooks? Are you gonna fight me or take it like a man?” 

  
“FUCK YOU Josh! Kiss my ass!” I yelled out loud enough for everyone to 
hear. 
  
I heard Reese behind me saying: ‘that's really talking him out of it.' But 
I was pissed now and didn't care. This jerk off had busted my balls too 
many times and I didn't care if I lost. I just wanted a piece of him to 
feel better. He came at me and I side stepped him and shoved him. He went 
flying to the ground and looked startled. I felt a great strength I had 
never felt before and suddenly realized that the lightning strike must had 
affected me in more ways then one. I was amazingly strong. No one else had 
notice yet but Josh. He got up and had a confused look on his face. Like 
he wanted to rip me apart but he didn't quite understand how I knocked him 
down so easily yet. He regained himself and got up and charged at me. I 
didn't have a lot of time to think and I really wasn't sure if I wanted 
everyone to see how strong I was and get labeled a freak or something so I 
jumped away and he missed me. I was faster then I was before too. Damn, 
what am I Superman or something? 
  
“Stand still Brooks you wimp. I am gonna kick your ass right back to that 
hospital bed for not giving me those answers.” 
  
Well at least everyone knew what it was about now. I didn't tell anyone he 
wanted to cheat to pass 9 th grade. He did it himself in a fit of anger. 
  
“I failed that test and now your gonna pay for me getting left back.” 
  
I saw red and suddenly didn't care who knew what. I only hoped I didn't 
kill him if I hit him too hard. Again he came at me and swung. I dodged 
his punch and nailed him in the ribs with a solid shot. Again he hit the 
ground. Now madder then ever and in pain he slowly got up and headed for 
me again. This was it. I was tired of playing with him and he was about to 
find out the hard way. 
  
“Look you ape. Stop now or you will regret this!” 
  
He laughed at me. 
  
“Ape? Fuck you! I'll give you ape right now.” 
  
“Guess you are going to learn the hard way then you fat tub of shit!” 
  
He growled like a mad man and headed at me I looked at Reese. 
  
A look of horror came across Reese's face and he tried to help me but I 
yelled for him to stay away. 
  
“I'm okay Reese. Don't get in the way. He is going down now!” 
  
Reese looked more puzzled then ever and Josh laughed at what I said and 
came at me again. He swung again and made contact with my hand. I stopped 
him cold on contact and reached for him, grabbed him by the waist with 
both hands and lifted him like he was nothing and threw him about 10 feet 
away. Reese's mouth just opened and nothing came out. I was in shock too 
and after he landed and bounced once he didn't move to get up and the 
others came over to see if I was okay. 
  
“You okay man?” One asked. 
  
“Yeah I am fine. He never hurt me.” 
  
The group just started talking in amazement over what I just did to Josh. 
Throwing him that far without a problem. I didn't know what to say as Josh 
slowly got to his feet and looked at me. Everyone grew quiet as he turned 
and walked away. 
  
“Have enough fat ass?” I yelled to him. 
  
He continued to walk away. Defeated! Suddenly I was a hero, like it or 
not, I didn't but also didn't have much choice right now. They were 
bombing me with questions I didn't want to answer and I went and sat on 
the bleachers and smiled at them. It grew quiet and I spoke. 
  
“Look guys. I don't really know what to tell you. You all saw what just 
happened and all I can guess is the lightning did it to me. I am just as 
confused as you are.” 
  
I wasn't about to tell them I barely used any strength to do that. It 
would have probably scared the hell out of some of them. I got lucky and 
no one questioned what I said and slowly they worked their way back to the 
field to play once again. 
Reese came over and sat next to me. You could hear them chat about it as 
they walked away some just shaking their heads and others high fiving! 
  
“Wholly shit Randy. How strong are you?” 
  
“I don't really know Reese but what I just did was nothing. I could have 
thrown him twice as far without a problem. After we leave maybe I will 
test it and find out how strong I am. I think I am going to have to tell 
my parents about this just to keep them from getting upset if they find 
out any other way.” 
  
“Everything?” 
  
“Yeah. I think I need to tell them everything.” 
 
We sat and watched them play for a while longer and I discussed what I 
should say to my mom and dad when I got home with Reese. I got up and 
walked over and waved good-bye to them. 
  
“I'll see you all at the game tonight as long as my mom lets me go.” 
  
They all waved back and Reese and I took off for my house. By now my dad 
would be home from his teaching and I could talk to them both. I asked 
Reese to leave me alone with my parents and I would call him for the game 
or after we talked. He agreed without a problem and after walking me to my 
door. I looked around and when I was sure no one was watching I have him a 
quick peck on the lips and he took off on his bike to go home. He only 
lives a few blocks away. Now its time to see how my parents will react to 
superman. I am really worried about this.
